February 2025 – Few games in history have had as dramatic a turnaround as Cyberpunk 2077. Launched in December 2020 by CD Projekt Red, the game faced harsh criticism due to a plethora of bugs, performance issues, and unfulfilled promises. However, through years of dedicated updates, expansions, and a commitment to rebuilding its reputation, Cyberpunk 2077 has transformed into one of the most well-regarded RPGs of the modern era.
Upon its release, Cyberpunk 2077 was met with overwhelming anticipation. The futuristic RPG, set in the neon-lit dystopia of Night City, promised deep player choices, immersive storytelling, and cutting-edge graphics. Unfortunately, it quickly became infamous for its technical problems, particularly on last-generation consoles, leading to its removal from the PlayStation Store and widespread refunds.
CD Projekt Red didn’t abandon ship. Over the following years, the developers worked relentlessly to fix issues, releasing major patches that improved stability, AI behavior, and game mechanics. In 2022, the Edgerunners anime on Netflix revitalized interest in the game, leading to a surge in players. The anime’s success proved that the Cyberpunk 2077 universe had immense storytelling potential beyond the game itself.
In September 2023, the Phantom Liberty expansion launched, introducing a gripping new spy-thriller storyline featuring Idris Elba as Solomon Reed. Alongside the DLC, the 2.0 Update overhauled core mechanics such as police AI, vehicle combat, and skill progression, making the game feel like the experience that was initially promised.
With Cyberpunk 2077 now receiving widespread praise, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a sequel is in development, currently codenamed “Project Orion.” While details remain scarce, the studio has promised to build upon the lessons learned and deliver an even more ambitious experience.
The redemption of Cyberpunk 2077 stands as one of gaming’s greatest comebacks, proving that with persistence, a rocky launch doesn’t have to define a game’s legacy. Night City is finally the immersive cyberpunk playground that fans always wanted, and its future looks brighter than ever.
